Wollongong is a large city in the Illawarra Region. With a population of over 300,000, it is located 88 km south of Sydney. It boasts a gigantic steelworks (BlueScope Steel, which covers a large part of the coastal area) and is also the regional center of the state's southern fishing industry. Despite these less than appealing tourist attractions, Wollongong boasts some great surfing beaches. Dynamic and festive, it is home to nearly 3,000 students at its internationally renowned university and to the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere, the Nan Tien or "Temple of Southern Paradise".
