Welcome to Alonissos!Patitiri, the main port and capital, meets all the logistical needs of the island but may seem to lack charm at first glance. Indeed, this rather modern city developed after the earthquake of 1965 which destroyed a good part of the Chora, the old historical capital located on the heights. The inhabitants of the Chora left their houses which had become unliveable and settled on the port in modern buildings built for the occasion and without the character of the old. The city inherited its name from the grape presses that were abundant until 1957, another catastrophic date for the island which experienced a terrible epidemic of phylloxera, which devastated a hitherto abundant vineyard. However, if the place does not have, a priori, a lot of charm, one likes to live there at the rhythm of the port and its numerous terraced cafés. This friendly city hides its secrets well, and one can quickly get lost in its labyrinthine streets where one can also quickly find a charming and unsuspected corner. The port and its beaches are coiled in a deep bay, as if embedded in limestone cliffs where the famous Mediterranean seal monk likes to lodge. It is here, in Patitiri, that you will discover the natural and cultural underwater heritage of the island: an unprecedented richness in the whole Aegean. Without forgetting the surrounding beaches which are among the most famous of the island. In this sense, Patitiri has more than one trick up its sleeve and reserves its most beautiful finery to those who will make the effort to spend a moment there.
