This village was the first capital of the island, before being devastated by the earthquake of 1965 which pushed the population to settle in Patitiri. If the cafes, terraces and small pensions come alive in summer, only a few inhabitants still live here. The winding and whitewashed streets are forbidden to cars and scooters, which gives the village a pretty postcard atmosphere (free and mandatory parking at the entrance of the village, otherwise regular bus from Patitiri). Perched on the heights, the old town offers superb views, up to Mount Athos on a clear day! One comes there especially in the evening, to enjoy the summer animation.
