Welcome to Samos!Vathi, the main port and capital of the island since 1854, has today 8,000 inhabitants. It is also frequently called simply Samos (you are warned here, it will avoid you some misunderstandings on the spot). Built in a wide natural bay, the port is bordered by a wide avenue in front of the sea (T. Sofouli Avenue) while the city is organized in amphitheatre, on the hillside. The red tile roofs dominate the landscape of this beautiful city, also chief town of the surrounding islands. As such, the city lives all year round and may be less quiet as a base to discover the island. But it is worth a visit for its terraces on the sea front, its animation and its beautiful neoclassical architecture, witness of the wealth accumulated by the island during the 19th century. One also comes to visit its two beautiful museums, and the old perched city of Ano Vathi. If you choose Vathi as your base, you can easily reach the northern beaches (Gaggou, Agia Paraskevi and Livadaki), which are pretty but very crowded. In the south, opt for the beautiful beaches of Kerveli (diving center), Posidonio, Klima or Psili Ammos which are all easily accessible as well.
