Karlovassi is the3rd largest city of Samos and its2nd largest port: there is a good chance that you will disembark here when arriving from the other Greek islands or from Piraeus. Karlovassi gives access to the western third of the island: unspoiled land, beautiful beaches and virgin nature, sometimes protected by the Natura 2000 label. This is the most mountainous part of Samos, with the two highest points of Mount Zestani (1,192 m) and Mount Kerkis (1,434 m) modulating a green and fertile territory. Karlovassi is a good base to discover this protected area, where life is less affected by tourism. The great Greek poet of the Resistance, Yannis Ritsos, spent much of his life in this town. Years after his marriage to a Samiote, he was put under house arrest in Karlovassi during the dictatorship of the colonels and spent the rest of his life there in freedom. He bequeathed us many poems written in the region.
