The legend says that Achilles stopped here with his fleet during the Trojan war. This seaside village in the north of Lesbos owes its name to its strange rock surmounted by the church Panaghia Glykofiloussa (18th century), accessible by more than 100 steps carved in the rock. In recent years, the seaside resort has experienced a great tourist development boosted by the attraction of its long beach, which changes its character a little. You can visit the stately home Vareltzidaina, with its preserved Ottoman structure, to get an idea of the richness of the place in the 18th century (open every day except Tuesday 8:30am-4pm in season, entrance 3 €).
