How could one suspect that this small, grey and dirty city was the witness of some of the most beautiful pages of Greek mythology? Thebes is the seat of one of the three great families of Greek mythology and the subject of many literary works, such as The Seven Against Thebes by Aeschylus or Oedipus King and Antigone, two masterpieces by Sophocles. Otherwise, Thebes is decidedly disappointing, for nothing in it holds the promise of the grace and beauty that emanate from these stories. Nothing, except a superb archaeological museum which, by itself, may be enough to convince you that a visit here is worthwhile.
