This important shopping mall is frankly not very touristy, but its four lively squares in the evening will convince some to stop there. This town of 46,000 inhabitants is built on the site of the ancient town of Lamia, on the southern slopes of Othri, near the river Spercheios. The first historical reference to Lamia dates back to 426 B.C. due to the destructive earthquake that caused damage in Thessaly. In the Middle Ages, the name of the town was changed to Zitouni. Lamia played an important role in the revolution of 1821. An archaeological museum, the Akro Lamia Castle overlooking the town from a hill and Thermopylaeus are other points of interest in Lamia.
