Zarqa is the country's third largest city after Amman and Irbid, 20 kilometres north-east of Amman. It has 900,000 inhabitants. This industrial city has no tourist interest, except for the Qasr Shabeeb, an ancient and tiny palace from the Roman period and much altered by the Umayyads and the Mamluks. The city of Zarqa became world famous on the occasion of a sad episode. It is on its military airport that the 4 planes hijacked by the FLP in September 1970 landed. The planes exploded in front of the world's cameras. If you travel by public transport to the east, you will cross the city.
