Bulgarian and mountain town, at the foot of the Belassitsa, with 35 000 inhabitants. At the junction between Bulgaria, Northern Macedonia and Greece, Petritch has developed a commercial activity which contributes to its prosperity. Its activity is based on the tobacco industry and the mild climate allows the production of fruits and peanuts. Petrich preserved its Bulgarian character during the Ottoman domination. In 1878, the Bulgarians of Macedonia appealed to the great powers against the decision taken at the Congress of Berlin to separate the region from Bulgaria. The region was strongly involved in the war of liberation.
