The small village of Rupite is home to the only volcano in Bulgaria, the Kozhuh planina (281 m). An area of 0.4 ha has even been declared a remarkable phenomenon of nature. People come here to enjoy the thermal springs with a temperature of 74°C and for the diversity of fauna and flora that protects several rare areas such as the cat snake and, during winter migrations, the pygmy cormorant. The small church of Sveta Petka Balgarska, built in 1994, is notable for the presence of the seeress Vanga (who died in 1996), who still attracts many pilgrims and tourists. She was for a long time the official seer of the communist government.
