Negotino is the country's third-largest wine-producing town, after Kavadarci and Gradsko, and boasts several major wineries: Bovin (1.5 million liters/year) and Pivka (400,000 liters), located at the entrance to the town near the freeway, and Venec (2 million liters), 6 km to the south in Dolni Disan. But it has to be said, we didn't make any sensational taste discoveries here. Unlike in Kavadarci, independent winemakers are rare in Negotino, and no one has really gone organic yet. We do, however, recommend a visit during the two wine festivals: February 14 and the third week of September. The town is quite pleasant, with a small renovated Ottoman quarter and a municipal museum. The latter houses artefacts from the ancient city of Antigonia, founded around 272 BC by Antigonus II Gonatas, one of Alexander the Great's heirs. The archaeological site lies just to the north, between the freeway and the Vardar. However, the ruins are not promoted in any way.
