Bathed by the Iskar river and at the foot of the Rila, this town is a good place to enjoy the ski area of Borovets (9 km away) without paying a high price or to go hiking in the surroundings. Historically, the town was founded in the 14th century to exploit the mines in the area. The Ottomans made it one of the first industrial centers in Bulgaria. In addition, the famous religious art school of Samokov was developed at the end of the 18th century around the local icon painters Hristo Dimitrov and his sons. Samokov is also known as one of the first places of experimentation of socialism since a commune was created there as early as 1910.
