15 km northeast of Dupnitsa. The ancient Thracian city was developed in Roman times and was named Germanea. Its fortress was restored by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. The ruins of the walls reveal the importance that the town had. Sapareva Banya is the birthplace of Belisarius, the famous commander of Emperor Justinian (527-565). The past and present of the town are linked to the mineral springs used for cures. The eruption of a geyser, during hydrogeological research, revealed that its springs are the hottest in Bulgaria. It is spectacular at night when illuminated.
