Dupnitsa, 25 km east of Kyustendil, is the center of tobacco cultivation in the Struma valley. The town itself is not very interesting. Even if some buildings are of quality. Here dominates the pragmatic architecture of the communist era. It is a good place to stop to explore the region, or to change buses or trains. The city was created after the Turkish invasion. The earliest evidence dates back to the 14th century. Dupnitsa is the birthplace of Hristaki Pavlovitch (1804-1848), man of letters and author of the first Bulgarian history textbooks. There is a possibility to make a beautiful hike from and to Rila.
