Capital of the province of the same name, this small town of 21,000 inhabitants lies 560 km from Bangkok, and 50 km from Chiang Khan, in the north-east of the country. In itself, it has little to offer. Cotton production is the region's great specialty. Quality garments are also made here, and are renowned throughout the country. The town is rather quiet in the evenings, and probably not the ideal place to come and party. But it's from Loei that you can explore the various national parks surrounding the town, notably Phu Kradueng, which is undoubtedly one of the best preserved in Thailand.
