From the region of Petchabun, you can access this immense park of nearly 1 000 km ². Dense forests; rough plains of bamboo and pine trees; many waterfalls; caves… It's one of the parks with the most varied fauna and flora. Among the animals likely to be seen are bears from Asia, gibbons and macaques (the latter in large numbers), some elephants, leopards and even tigers, although it is doubtful whether they would be surprised, if they did survive. They were probably exterminated, as were the so-called «Sumatra» rhino, whose latest specimens were in the early 1970 s! This situation can be explained by the great poverty of the inhabitants of the region, to whom all means are good to survive. In addition, there are few forest guards, and their low wages are subject to certain temptations. However, for some years, under pressure from international ngos, progress has been made to effectively protect animals from the national park of Nam Nao. Poachers are punished more severely than before. An exhibition room, open to the public, recounts the progress of this daily struggle and its results. We can see a collection of more or less artisanal weapons and traps confiscated from offenders. To get there, De or Loei, take a bus for Station (about 1 hour drive). The park is then 55 km from Station and 103 km from Khon Kaen. In order to sleep in the park, tents are rented or bungalows of 8 people (very basic). Entry: 200 B.
