Thaton is a quiet little town on the banks of the Mae Kok River, which is the town's main attraction as it can be floated down by pirogue. It lies to the north of the town of Fang, not far from the Myanmar border and around 70 km north-west of Chiang Rai. A large Buddha dominates the bridge, from the top of a hill overlooking the Kok River, next to a temple. Nearby, several ethnic mountain villages are worth a visit. The region is also home to numerous tea plantations, where Oolong tea, a Chinese variety, is grown.
