This small town is a staging post between Lampang and Nan. Built after Chiang Mai became the region's capital, the area boasts one of the country's largest teak forests. Still untouched by mass tourism, the town's simplicity is its main attraction. The local calendar includes a number of interesting festivals, for which it is advisable to check with the Chiang Mai TAT before travelling to Phrae. The ancient walled city offers some superb traditional houses to discover, and there are some interesting temples in the vicinity.
