Cachoeira, "the jewel of the Recôncavo" is located 2 hours drive from Salvador, on the banks of the Rio Paraguaçu. The city has few modern buildings and has kept its narrow streets, houses and colonial churches intact. This is why it was classified by the IPHAN (Institute of Historical and Artistic National Heritage) in 1971. The city has been awarded the label of "National Monument" and "Heroic City" in recognition of Cachoeira's decisive participation in Brazil's independence struggles. The city is also known for its woodcarving workshops and is an important centre of Candomblé
