Getting to the village of Morro de São Paulo is well worth the effort. The journey begins with a 2-hour catamaran ride from Salvador (or a traditional boat ride from Valença) along a coastline of coconut palms and mangroves. Then, you catch sight of a hill protected by fortifications dating back to 1630, and wooden sailing boats. It's a vision out of a pirate movie, and we expect to see Johnny Depp sugir of a ship. At the top, dominating the scene, a white lighthouse. It was a village, two or three sandy lanes. Around the village, wild beaches, dozens of kilometers of white sand, and bangs of palm trees. Today, the atmosphere has changed a little. Pousadas and restaurants have replaced the fishermen's houses, but Brazilians and a few foreign tourists love this setting where nature is still omnipresent. No cars, there's nowhere to go! Around the village, the beaches are wild, with dozens of kilometers of white sand and bangs of palm trees. The beaches are numbered: Primeira, Segunda, Terceira and Quarta Praia. The further you go, the more peaceful it is. And to get to the fourth, you have to pass through the other beaches, which are just a 15-minute walk away and offer such lovely views that it's hard not to stop and take a dip in the clear, warm waters along the way.In the evening, you're back in the village, irresistibly drawn by its lights, the music of its cafés, the little shopkeepers sprawling across the square..
