Kericho is surrounded by tea plantations, inherited from the former British colony. Tea is a major source of income for Kenya. Most of the production is exported to the UK. The hills covered with plantations are bright green and have a beautiful glow before and after the rains. The town is named after a Maasai chief, Ole Kericho, who was killed in a battle with the Gusii in the 18th century. The plantations rise to an altitude of 2,200m. They enjoy favourable climatic conditions that allow for harvesting every two weeks, all year round.
