Kakamega Forest is the only rainforest in Kenya. It is in fact a remnant of the immense rainforest belt that crossed Africa from west to east. This real jungle has suffered, and still suffers, from deforestation and this despite its classification as a National Reserve in 1985. It is a pity, because it is a unique site, famous in the whole world for its ornithological wealth. In this enchanting setting, more than 350 species of birds have been listed, some of which cannot be seen anywhere else in Kenya (hornbills, jacos or the big blue touracos). The forest is also populated by many monkeys: white-bearded Brazza's cercopithecus, black and white colobus, red-tailed monkeys, as well as a multitude of small animals: otters, civets, porcupines, pangolins, flying squirrels. We also have the opportunity to meet some big animals: wild boars and sometimes leopards, without forgetting the very famous sloth!Another exceptional attraction is the butterflies. During the summer, the undergrowth is invaded by thousands of multicolored butterflies that flutter from flower to flower. More than 400 species of butterflies have been listed here
