It is in this small village, located 10 km southwest of Kisii, that soapstone is mined and carved. This industry has become an important source of income for the region. It is possible to visit one of the many workshops in the city to admire the work of the workers. Soapstone (the learned name for this soft stone) is wet, then carved, polished and finally varnished. If you want to buy some, this is the place to do it, as the prices are ridiculously low compared to the souvenir shops in Nairobi or Mombasa. If you are lucky, you may find an original item.
