Eldoret is the seat of one of the most important universities of the country, which is for much in the dynamism of this city, with the fast growth. It is a modern city of little interest, but it can be a stopover. It was founded by Boer settlers from South Africa, who were fleeing their country, in 1905. The city was marked by the violence of 2008, when about 40 Kikuyu were burned alive in a church by their Luo opponents. Violence against the Kikuyu was intense in the area, and many of them fled. Eldoret is the hometown of the famous Kenyan runner Kipchoge Keino and many others.
