A small, compact town with a bustling market, Kisii lives almost exclusively from agriculture and specializes in horticulture and sugar cane. It is of little interest to the passing traveller, except that it is famous for its soapstone. This pretty pastel-coloured stone is used to make all sorts of objects sold in all the souvenir shops in the country. Kisii is the capital of the Gusii, a Bantu-speaking people who live in the middle of a region where no Bantu live... The Gusii are surrounded to the south by the Maasai, to the east by the Kipsigi and to the west and north by the Luo.
