The name of this town of 5,000 inhabitants comes from Alta Falisia: High Cliff. Houffalize lies at an altitude of 350 meters, with a highest point of 456 meters (the côte Saint-Roch is popular with cyclists). The remains of an 8th-century castle can be seen here, as the town was important in the early Middle Ages. Houffalize was awarded the Croix de Guerre (AR March 31, '61) for the terrible bombing raids that caused so many deaths. It's a pearl in the heart of the Ardennes, a corner forgotten by pollution, a land of rocks and meanders, a kingdom of panoramas as it is the gateway to the 2 Ourthes nature park.
