Founded in 1537, this border town with Chile participated valiantly in the independence struggles. Taken by the southern neighbours during the Pacific War in 1880, Tacna was only returned to Chile in 1929. The large green valley in the middle of the dunes is the centre of a great economic activity. Passing through a desert plateau of pink rocks emerging from the blond sand, the journey from Moquegua to Tacna offers fascinating landscapes of the Peruvian coast. Tacna, capital of the department of Tacna, has few tourist and cultural attractions. However, the city is a stopover for those travelling to and from Chile.
