21 km north-east of Queenstown, on the banks of the Arrow River, this charming little town, created in 1862 following the discovery of beautiful gold nuggets, is inhabited by no less than 2,900 people. At the time of the gold rush, the population reached a peak of 7,000 people. It is now a tourist center with old architecture very well maintained in each of its few streets (including Buckingham Street) and its miners' cabins (Chineese Settlement). Short hikes take you along the waters of the Arrow River where you can try your luck at panning for gold! Push your search to the ghost town of Macetown.
