Twenty kilometers south of Te Anau, this village of 240 inhabitants is located on the shores of the lake of the same name and is the starting point for Doubtful Sound. It is a fjord that has nothing to envy to the Milford Sound, it is less touristic but much more peaceful. Lake Manapouri is the second deepest lake in the country with its 440 meters depth, after Lake Hauroko (462 meters) and before Lake Wakatipu (380 meters). Manapouri is less crowded than Te Anau and yet also offers a beautiful lake view with the mountains in the background. Some nice day hikes are possible here: Frasers Beach (30 minutes), Pearl Harbour via Circle Track (6.9 kilometers for 3h30), Hope Arm (7.8 kilometers for 6 hours). All Manapouri walks can be found at the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau.
