To go down on the east coast towards Dunedin, you will have to go through Alexandra. This city owes its name to the Danish Princess Alexandra, who married the Prince of Wales (the future Edouard VII) in 1863, the year of the founding of the city. Its expansion is partly due to the gold rush. Some open-air mines are still visiting. Now its economic activity is based on agriculture. Here the climate is classified semi-desert, with only 335 mm of rain per year and temperatures that range between - 10 ° C in winter and 30 ° C in summer.
