Opened in 1964, Mount Aspiring National Park stretches from west to south, from the Haast River to Fiordland, north of Lake Wakatipu. It includes Mount Aspiring (3,033 m), often compared to the Matterhorn in Switzerland due to its pyramidal shape. It is the only peak above 3,000 m outside the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The park shares its southern border with Fiordland National Park and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mount Aspiring National Park is an exceptional paradise for hikers and climbers alike. It offers excellent trails, including the famous Routeburn Track (thirty-three kilometers), which attracts over fifteen thousand walkers every year. You can get a taste of what's on offer with day hikes such as the Rob Roy Track (ten kilometers round trip, three to four hours), the West Matukituki Track (four hours round trip from the parking lot to Aspiring Hut), the Blue Pools Track (just over three kilometers, one hour round trip).
