Picton is nestled on the edge of the Sounds and has an inimitable charm. It is the gateway to the South Island for those who travel by sea from the capital. The crossing is magnificent and offers sumptuous landscapes. Despite its modest size, Picton is very touristy; its geographical location and the immense beauty of its region make it easy to spend several days hiking, kayaking or exploring by boat.Founded in 1848 and originally called "Newton". It was named after one of the Duke of Wellington's generals, Sir Thomas Picton.
