Situated on a fertile plain, this town of 8,300 inhabitants lives mainly from the resources generated by fruit crops (pears, apples, kiwis, hops) and dairy farming. Motueka derives from the Maori words motu ("grove") and weka ("bird"). The fertility of the land led many settlers to leave Nelson and move further afield, founding the commune in 1842. It is one of the gateways to Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks.
