Travel Guide Monts Madonie

The Madonie mountains are the highest mountain range in Sicily, after Etna. They connect with the Nebrodi mountains in Gangi, between Petralia Sottana and Nicosia. Formed mainly by limestone rocks, the central part of the massif is covered here and there by beech trees. The highest peak is the Pizzo Carbonara (1,979 m). In 1989, the Madonie Park was classified as a protected natural area, with an area of 40,000 hectares. It represents a particularly interesting area, both from the point of view of the flora (holm oaks, cork oaks, holly and beech trees) and from the point of view of the fauna (wild cats, foxes, hares, dormice, birds of prey, among which the golden eagle).
