At the foot of Mount Calogero (36 km from Palermo), this spa town is one of the most famous in Sicily, since its virtues were praised by the poet Pindar himself. Successively Roman, Arab, Norman, it keeps traces of these dominations. Today, it is known for the factories that have occupied its coasts and polluted the water. It is articulated in two cores: the lower city, modern and uninteresting, rather unattractive, and the upper city, old and with tortuous streets, with interesting buildings, witnesses of the wealth of this port since the Middle Ages. The ruins of the ancient city are worth visiting.
