Selinunte is Segesta's eternal rival, with its colossal Greek temple ruins set in the middle of the countryside overlooking the sea. To observe it, one feels lyrical thrusts rising in us! Located near the mouth of the Selinon river, from which it takes its name, the ancient city was founded by the Greeks in the 7th century BC. (according to Diodorus of Sicily). Brought out of oblivion by excavations undertaken by the English in the 19th century, Selinunte is now one of the most important archaeological parks in the Mediterranean. Many of the pieces found here, including painted vases and bas-reliefs, are kept in the archaeological museums of Palermo and Castelvetrano.Tourist Office (open from 9am to 8pm in summer, from 9am to 12pm and from 3pm to 6pm in winter). It is located at the entrance of the archaeological park. Further information: www.selinunte.net; +39 0924 462 51.
