In the past, this was the city of Branciforte, which was devastated by the 1693 earthquake. For its reconstruction, the architect Michele de la Ferla used a spider's web urban plan based on the model of the city of Palmanova (Friuli) of 1593. A system of concentric hexagons around a central hexagonal square. Around it are the café, the bank, the palazzo comunale (1896) which houses the original slate plan of the town, the wisely Baroque mother church (1723-1765), and the main shops. Also worth seeing are the church of San Leonardo, with a wooden crucifix from 1600, and the sanctuary of the Madonna del Piano.
