Favara is a municipality of 33,000 inhabitants, located less than 10 km northeast of Agrigento. The churches are of recent construction (18th and 19th centuries). The Chiaramontano castle is a very good example of the 13th century type of architecture, solid, on a compact quadrangular base, refined by some details here and there (portals, windows). Finally, the surrounding area allows you to delve deeper into the history of the island, with a Bronze Age necropolis and the ruins of a Roman villa (1st century BC), where some mosaic decorations can still be seen. Favara is also ideal to taste those typical Sicilian paintings with old ladies in black seeming to meditate in front of their doors. In contrast to tradition, its centre, which was falling into ruin and abandoned, has been rehabilitated as a museum of contemporary art called Cultural Park Farm. We recommend a visit here for a change from the Greco-Roman temples, baroque churches and Sicilian epinal images, as here societal issues are addressed through the prism of art.
