With its white, low and flat houses, Níjar retains its deep Moorish roots and is also an important centre for crafts. It produces jarapas, handmade blankets, alfarerías, glazed pottery of Arab origin, and ceramics. Surrounded by desert landscapes, it is also a starting point for excursions to the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, or to the Sierra de Alhamilla Natural Park, which rises to an altitude of 1,365 m above the town. As the city and its region have been the setting for many film shoots, the city council is playing this card by promoting this destination.
