A biosphere reserve since 1997, it is the jewel of the province. It covers 26,000 ha of land, plus a further 12,000 ha of sea. On the sea side, it is crystal-clear and rich in variety. On the land side, its arid appearance conceals a wealth of flora and fauna, such as the pink flamingos that find refuge in the San Miguel salt flats. Characterized by a volcanic mountainous relief, this 60 km stretch of coastline occupies an area bounded by Almería, Níjar and Carboneras, and includes the spectacular Cabo de Gata, a rocky cape jutting out into the Mediterranean. And a succession of beaches, coves and cliffs.
