Chitré is the only important town in the region. Its name would mean "moon" in the indigenous language. On the tourist side, there is not much of interest, except for a modest museum on local history and traditions and a central park that is pleasant in the evening when the heat falls. This Parque Unión is dominated by the San Juan Bautista cathedral, built between 1896 and 1910 and remarkable for its simplicity. Try to be in the area at the time of a festival to appreciate the crazy atmosphere that reigns there. The locals are very proud of their traditions and will lead you through parades of costumes and carts, drum, violin or mejorana competitions, or bullfights. To discover the artisanal workshops of the surrounding villages, it is recommended to go through a local agency, if your budget allows it, because the workshops are rarely indicated and the craftsmen are not always available for surprise visits.
