Isla Cañas is located near the village of Cañas, just across the street. Nearly 24,284 hectares of coastline, mangroves and estuaries make up this protected area since 1994, which you can explore by paddle board or kayak. The journey to the island, especially at low tide, is a real epic for those who want to go there alone. The effort is well rewarded since it is on these black sand beaches that the turtles come to lay their eggs between July and December. It happens that more than 10 000 turtles come ashore in one night, usually around October and November, but you can see them as early as April. Isla Cañas is said to be the most important turtle nesting site in the Panamanian Pacific, especially for the Olivácea (or mulato or golfina) turtle.
