20 km north of Santiago, on the road to Santa Fé, San Francisco de la Montaña is famous for its colonial church, San Francisco de Asís, dating from 1727. It boasts a magnificent altarpiece and nine wooden altarpieces. The sculptures feature indigenous features evoking the religious syncretism of the period. This fine example of Baroque art is the anonymous work of Europeans and Indians who came to seek gold in the Belém and Veraguas rivers. After your visit, about 1 km away, you can cool off at the El Salto waterfall.
