Founded between 1614 and 1620, Atalaya is a modest village located 5 km southeast of Santiago, whose main attraction is its basilica. The pride of its inhabitants, its representation of Jesus of Nazareth attracts pilgrims from all over the country every year for a long procession on the Sunday of Lent. The patron saint of the village, San Miguel Arcángel, is celebrated with great fervour on 29 September, with balls, bullfights, fireworks, etc. Atalaya is easily accessible by bus from the terminal in Santiago, which runs about every 15 minutes.
