Located at 800 metres above sea level, Mizpe Ramon was founded in 1951 as a camp for the workers building the road to Eilat, as well as a military post. The first permanent residents of the city, Jewish immigrants from North Africa and Romania, settled here in the 1960 s.The major Interest of Return Ramon is undoubtedly the huge crater on which it was built. This oval crater is the largest in the world: 40 km long and 9 km wide, and its southwest end reaches the Egyptian border. Its edges are brown, red, purple and ochre cliffs: when the light is beautiful, the colours glow up to the bottom of the crater, along with the black lava hills. With its magnificent and particularly isolated landscape, Makhtesh Ramon is Israel's largest natural reserve. Each year, in August, thousands of curious and astronomers, amateurs and professionals, move to Return Ramon to observe the rain of meteorites that are particularly visible at this season in the region.
