In common parlance, Los Cabos designates the entire area grouping San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, separated by barely 30 kilometres. The four lanes that connect the two cities offer access to 17 beaches, almost all of which are dotted with tourist facilities. The average annual temperatures are around 27°C, with the mildest in January (18°C) and the highest in August (29°C). All of this is accompanied by cool breezes that are a welcome relief. More than 800 types of fish can be found in the waters, including the famous marlin, which can measure up to 4 m and weigh 230 kg. Unfortunately, this is the realm of North American sport fishing. San José del Cabo is made up of two distinct areas: on the one hand, the charming colonial town founded as a Jesuit mission in 1730 after having been a simple supply port for Spanish ships on the route to the Philippines, as well as a refuge for privateers; on the other, the coastal fringe on which modern and imposing establishments have replaced the small fishermen's settlements
