MISIÓN DE SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO ANUITI

The mission of San José del Cabo Añuití was founded in 1730 by the Jesuit missionaries Nicolás Tamaral and José Echevarría. Four years later, Father Tamaral was killed with stones and arrows by the Pericúes Indians, in response to the abuses committed by the missionaries and their acolytes. It is this scene that is now depicted in a mosaic above the main entrance to the present church, which dates from 1940.
