The capital of the province of the same name lies in a highly fertile valley where coffee grows in abundance, along with corn, rice and green bananas. The Victorian houses of this large farming town, which centralizes the region's activities, bear witness to a prosperity that is still evident. San Juan is a historic center of Taino culture. Many ceremonies were celebrated here. El Corral de los Indios, a large circle of earth surrounded by stones, probably reconstructed, can still be seen in the vicinity, serving as a gathering place for the Indians. According to legend, Queen Anacoana used to sit on the central stone.
