Surface coal mining in Sainte-Foy dates back to 1740.
Surface mining of coal in Sainte-Foy dates back to 1740. The village developed when a member of the de Fenoyl family bought and developed the coal mines. At first, there were only open galleries, but then shafts were dug up to 600 metres deep. In 1812, the name Sainte-Foy-les-Houilles was given. The exploitation was stopped in March 1931 and then resumed from 1940 to 1945 to supply the homes. There is no visible trace of this mining operation except for a slag heap near the ZA du Val d'Argent.
